O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, bless His name; tell of His salvation from day to day.
This is a trick question: what is the eleventh commandment? Hint: it appears more than seven times in the Bible... If you said the eleventh commandment is “sing a new song to the Lord”, you are right! The unknown commandment is discussed at great length in a small book entitled The Singing Thing, by John Bell, a Scottish hymn-writer and minister of The Church of Scotland. Rev. Bell also writes about angel apprentices, people who believed they cannot sing. He asserts that God would not expect us to sing a new song if some of us are created without the ability to sing? We all are created to lift praises to our Glorious Creator in song.
I thank you for the opportunity to travel to Austin in January and spend two weeks studying Music in the Church’s Worship. This was a class that, in many ways, I have waited my entire seminary career to attend. However, I do want to complete the Doctor of Ministry program. So, I will not be asking all of the 'angel apprentices' in our congregation to suddenly join the choir or lead all of us in song. If I did, you might not allow me to travel back to Austin for my final classes.
There is a project due in conjunction with the Music In the Church’s Worship course that may appeal to some of you, whether you have a voice of an angel or are still an apprentice. I would like to establish a Worship Advisory Group (WAG) that would meet with me weekly to craft our worship service. The vision includes sharing insights on the lectionary selections for the week, selecting hymns and adapting the service schedule for church life events. Your commitment might be for a month, one week every month or for 52 weeks. Please let me know if you are interested in becoming a WAG. Send me an e-mail (@firstname.lastname@example.org) or drop a note by the church office. We will have a logistics meeting before a formal schedule is established.
